Velyanova House, 5 Velyan Ognev Street
The Velyanova House is an architectural and ethnographic museum in Bansko. It has been built at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century in the typical for that period Bansko style of fortified houses. Their fortification was needed because of the numerous attacks by bandits at that time. The Velyanova House gains its present appearance and name after it has become the home of the painter and wood-carver Velyan Ognev - a representative of the Debar art school. He lived there with his two sons and his young wife. It is him who creates the murals and wood-carving in the house, which have made it the most original Bansko house and because of which, it is listed as a national monument of culture. The Velyanova House was the only private home in Bansko with an indoors toilet and bathroom - something totally untypical for Bulgarian house of that period. The house itself is made of stone and has two floors. On the ground floor is located a spacious cellar, a hiding place and a workshop for the master. A stone staircase from the entrance of the hide-out connects it with the woman's room on the second floor. On this floor are also located the living room, dining room, the work room, a spacious veranda, sanitary corner. The most beautiful of the rooms is the one of Velyan Ognev's wife adorned with beautiful sophisticated murals. One of them depicts the painter riding a horse. The architecture of the Velyanova House in Bansko and separate elements from the typical fortified houses are very sober, which makes the flamboyant wood-carving and murals stand out even more. In them master Velyan Ognev recreates landscapes from the famous at that time large European cities, scenes from everyday life, natural landscapes. In 1977 the house is open as an Ethnographic museum. Its business hours are Monday to Friday, 9-12 AM and 2-5 PM.
