The Permanent Icon Exhibition "Bansko art school" was open for the first time in 1986. It is displayed in the building of the Hilendar (Rilski) convent in Bansko, built in 1749. This is the oldest original building in the town. This is the former nunnery, which at first belonged to the Hilendar (Zograf) Monastery in Mount Athos and later was given up to the Rilski Monastery. During the 18th and 19th century it was an important spiritual center of Bansko and the nearby villages. The one-storey building is preserved in its original appearance and is located in the center of the old town of Bansko, across the street from the monument of Paisius of Hilendar (Paisii Hilendarski). Nearby is also located the Holy Trinity Church. The Permanent Icon Exhibition "Bansko art school" includes icons made in the period from 1770 till the First World War, displayed by themes in three main halls. The first hall is called "The Donors" and is dedicated to the people who made endowments for the building, painting, wood-carving and icon-painting of chapels, churches and monasteries. The second hall is called "The Atelier". Here are displayed various accessories of the apprentices of the Bansko school of art, a copy of a sketch book of Toma Vishanov-Molera and other tools of the craft. In the third hall are displayed the icons themselves. Some of them are copies and other - originals. Here may be seen icons by the creator of the Bansko school of art - Molera, who studied in Vienna, and its his followers. The Bansko school of art is part of the process of creation of various Bulgarian Revival schools together with the Samokov, Debar and Tryavna schools. The most famous representatives of the Bansko school of art are the masters from the Molerovi family, Ognyan Ognyanov, Nikola Benin, Dimitar Sirleshtov, Angel Velyanov, etc.
